Meet Optimus: Tesla’s Humanoid Robot That Could Change the World
Updated: May 24
Tesla is known for its innovative electric cars, but the company has another ambitious project in the works: a humanoid robot called Optimus.
Optimus is designed to be a general-purpose robot that can perform tasks that are dangerous, repetitive or boring for humans.
It could also help with manufacturing, household chores, and even entertainment.
Optimus was first announced at Tesla’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event in August 2021, where CEO Elon Musk claimed that the company would likely build a prototype by 2022.
Since then, Tesla has shared some updates on the robot’s progress and capabilities.
At its annual shareholder meeting in May 2023, Tesla showed a video of Optimus walking, recognizing objects, and lifting weights.
The robot looked sleek and agile, with a humanoid shape and a screen for a face. Musk said that Optimus would be produced en masse, at a cost lower than $20,000, and be available in three to five years.
At Tesla’s second AI Day event in September 2023, semi-functional prototypes of Optimus were displayed on stage. One prototype was able to walk around and wave to the audience, while another could move its arms and fingers.
Musk said that Optimus would use the same AI system that Tesla is developing for its self-driving cars, and that it would be able to learn from humans and adapt to different situations.
Optimus is not just a sci-fi fantasy. It is a potential game-changer for the world of AI and robotics.
By leveraging Tesla’s expertise in hardware, software, and battery technology, Optimus could become one of the most advanced and affordable robots ever made.
It could also open up new possibilities for human-robot interaction and collaboration.
Optimus could be a revolutionary product that could benefit humanity in many ways. As Musk said at the first AI Day event, “It really is a fundamental transformation of civilization as we know it.”
